G.O.A.T. – Ludacris?

November 30, 2008

Before you freak out and blacklist My Bass Rocks entirely, take a step back and listen to the rationale behind this suggestion.  In a recent interview with DJ Premier, he noted Ludacris as being within his top 20 list for all-time best MC’s.  In the same sentence, he also mentions such legends as Reverend Run, Biggie, and Nas (to name a few).  As wild as this notion seems at first, it made me take a step back and think for a second…Could Luda be one of the greatest to rock the mic?

It’s only fitting I bring up this question while his latest LP, Theatre of the Mind recently dropped.

Kanye West is a Douche

November 25, 2008

Wow…Definitely the funniest article I’ve read in a long time. Here’s an excerpt:

In an interview with Tim Westwood, Kanye said “I’m doing pretty good as far as geniuses go… I’m like a machine. I’m a robot. You cannot offend a robot… I’m going down as a legend, whether or not you like me or not.  I am the new Jim Morrison. I am the new Kurt Cobain… They feel like, yo, you know ‘he’s got a God complex, because he said if they wrote the Bible again that he would be in it’.”

Speechless…DOUCHE!

Props to J-Yee!

I’ve Been Pimp’n

Common: “I’ve Been Pimp’n (prod. Dilla)”

Above is an unreleased joint by Common and J Dilla, from DJ Eves’ Laced With Gems mixtape.

I know it’s been over two years, but it’s these kind of leaks that remind me just how much hip-hop misses Dilla.  The one thing that this genre lacks severely, is originality…Dilla had a way of constantly redefining his style, in a way that no other producer has been able to do since.

R.I.P. Dilla, you are missed…

Via Nah.

Mark your calendars for a March 2009 release!  I’ve heard that one before…But with the roll that good hip-hop has been on lately (i.e. Large Pro, Black Milk, Jake One, etc.), I wouldn’t doubt that it’s possible.

Could we be in receiving another classic from Rae?  I’m thinking yes.

It’s about time that Bass Radio gave some shine to the late 90’s/early 00’s.  Do I even need to say anything about this?  Above is an underground classic from the Rawkus Records golden era…As my good homie Byron once put it: “Black Star was our Illmatic.”  Word bond.

Oh, and if you haven’t heard Pete Rock’s remix to this, you should probably continue reading…

For Luda’s upcoming album Theatre of the Mind (11/25), he’s enlisted hip-hop godfather DJ Premier for some exclusive production.  Here’s the outcome:

Ludacris: “MVP (prod. DJ Premier)”

Sounds pretty crucial if you axe me…Oh, and check the studio session between these two after the jump.

Joe Quixx

November 19, 2008

Being a Bay Area transplant, I never had the opportunity to grow up surrounded by  the local scene.  It’s well known that the early 90’s brought about some real ill culture, and the west coast had it’s plate-full of style and significance during this time.  While the New York hip-hop scene remained dominant, the left-side was slept on harder than it should have been.  The acts that saw their fair share of shine remained closer to the mainstream (i.e. Too $hort, Ice Cube, etc), but it was the underground that never gained the props they truly deserved.

From my short stay in The City, I’ve come to learn a significant amount about the underground scene, and all the insanely talented MC’s and DJ’s that call The Bay home.  Joe Quixx is one of these artists, and I recently had the luck of stumbling across two incredible joints from this legendary producer/DJ.
