Blackout! 2

May 30, 2009

It’s been nearly a decade since Meth & Red released an official follow-up to their 1999 classic Blackout!, and the obvious sequel has been long overdue.  The first album got serious rotation in the late nineties/early 2000’s, and still sounds fresh to this day when played in the blaster…Two important points in favor of the “classic” argument.

There has never been a more animated duo in hip-hop, and the overall energy these two bring when combined is off the charts.  Whether on stage (if you haven’t witnessed this you’re tripping) or through the mic, Red & Meth stretch out a wide array of feelings…From laid-out weed anthems, to bang-your-head street joints, they have all areas in between covered.

It’s been a long time coming, but well worth the wait..

Review after the jump.

Bass Radio had to eventually give a shout out to one of the illest cities in the world, and a place I will  always consider home.  “Home” is Jake One’s ode to Seattle (aka The Emerald City aka The 206), and he does it very proper here, complete with Nate Burleson (Seahawks #81) and Sir Mix-a-lot cameos.

If you’re not up to speed with the Jake One’s (near) classic, peep the review HERE.

Fashawn Wants Freedom

May 27, 2009

Fashawn just released his latest single with Exile entitled “Freedom,” available for download on iTunes HERE.  Also, peep the newest leak “The Outer City,” which is an exclusive release that will not be available on his upcoming debut Boy Meets World:

Fashawn: “The Outer City (prod. Exile)”

It just keeps getting better and better…

Raekwon: “Once Upon A Time In America”

Wow…Above is a joint from The Chef himself, which apparently comes from the forthcoming OB4CL2 dropping this summer.  If this is legit, expect great things for Raekwon in 2009.  Real hip-hop is back!

Only Built 4 Cuban Linx 2 available August 11th.

Shouts to HypeBeast.

Skull Raps

May 22, 2009

Even though “It’s A New Day” by Skull Snaps is regarded within the rap community as one of the most influential break records ever, I thought I’d spend a little time digging into its overall impact on hip-hop.  Obviously, the genre’s best were all over this record when it was re-discovered in the late 80’s by Dooley-O…But once hip-hop got their hands on “It’s A New Day,” the flood gates opened.

Let’s take a deeper look..

Happy Birthday to the late-great Notorious B.I.G., who during his short-lived career gave hip-hop two undeniable classics, and is universally regarded as one of the best (If not the best) to touch the mic.  He would have been 37 years old today.

How Did I Miss This?

May 21, 2009

Above is the first single of Cali’s own Fashawn, which features Dilated Peoples front man Evidence.  The album Boy Meets World drops in August, with Exile providing all production duties (thank you Lord).  If you know anything about Exile, then you know about his instant classic with Blu that released in 2007 (review HERE).

This is definition of what hip-hop is missing.  Real lyricist with real beats.  This is now #1 on my anticipation list.  Cotdamn!

Fashawn interview with Peter Rosenberg on Real Late (Hot 97) after the jump..

How come it’s taken so long for Bass Radio to pay homage to King T’s classic?  This HAS to be the Bass Rocks official theme music from here on out…Too obvious to ignore.  I can’t seem to find the OG version for streaming, which is only available on 12″.  It’s a little more rugged and stripped down (less horns).  Don’t sleep if you come across a copy at your local record shop.

Can’t get enough of everlasting……..BASS!
